FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze by the side of the road this evening after a bus burst into flames in Stokenchurch.

Onlookers say the single-decker vehicle, believed to be the Arriva number 40, started billowing thick plumes of smoke as the rear caught fire on the A40 Wycombe Road.

Witnesses also told the BFP they believe no one was on the bus, though several were evacuated before the flames took hold.

Firefighters were called at 5.10pm to the blaze, which happened close to Stokenchurch Fire Station.

A crew from Stokenchurch put out the fire, leaving the scene at around 6pm.

They have confirmed the bus was destroyed by the flames.

Nearly 10 of us were on bus, it was Arriva 40 to Highwycombe. All of us got down near fire station when it started smoking.Bus driver managed to get a fire extinguisher quickly but in no time smoke engulfed thick and blinding.I regulary travel this route and these Arriva buses are always problematic. Buses are very old and this is a common problem though it never blew up like this.

Best thing that could happen to those old wrecks, about time they had some newer ones.

this is not the first time this has happened must be an issue with this bus model or not good servicing but I think is putting passengers lives at risk.

Stokenchurch are a retained station, it means it's not manned 24 hours like Wycombe! The FF's respond from work or home via a pager
