A HIGH Wycombe schoolboy punched his way to glory this week, clinching gold at a major tournament in Hungary to become a European champion boxer.

Aadam Hussain, 13, who attends The Highcrest Academy on Hatters Lane, battled through four rounds in the 38.5kg category to taste glory at the European Schoolboy Championships in Keszthely.

The year eight pupil, who represents Pinewood Starr Boxing Club in Berkshire, overcame Hungarian Renato Rostas 3:0 to win gold in the final bout.

And the triumphant future star was given a rousing reception when his schoolmates were told of his sporting achievement following his victory yesterday.

Highcrest Principal, Shena Moynihan, said: "I know that his parents are rightly proud of his achievement and so are we at Highcrest. Aadam takes his boxing very seriously and approaches all his training in an extremely disciplined way so he really deserves his success.

“He aspires to be the best in his chosen sport and is certainly achieving it. When I told all the Year seven and Year eights of Aadam's triumph during assembly all the students cheered and clapped Aadam's achievement."

Previously, Aadam defeated opponents from Slovakia, Ireland and Bulgaria in the earlier rounds before taking the top spot on the podium with a comprehensive final win.

Team England's John Johnson also took gold in the 54kg weight category.
