THE sun was shining on Flackwell Heath at the weekend as families enjoyed a rare community village picnic.

Despite initial concerns about hovering rain clouds, the weather forecast did not deter residents and businesses from enjoying an ‘old fashioned day out’.

All the family were entertained on Sunday, July 13, as villagers joined in for the second Flackwell Heath Fete and Picnic on the Recreation Ground, Straight Bit.

The event was jointly organised by the Flackwell Heath Residents Association and Community Association.

FHRA chairman Janet Smith said: “We saw many family groups settle down to their picnics and spend time wandering round the different village groups who were happy to chat to fellow residents about what they get up to.

“And (there was) even more families who just popped along to see what was going on - perhaps they'll bring a picnic too next year!”

Entertainment was on offer throughout the afternoon with many groups performing.

Taking part were Bucks drama group the Mavericks while performing music were John Dunsterville and XCS Reggae Soca Band.

Village groups including the History Society, the Allotments Association, Bee Keepers, Metal detectors, Temple End Vets and the Royal British Legion also took part in the day.

There was also a Teddy Bear picnic and a bouncy castle for the village’s younger residents.

As well as host of entertainment, stalls and refreshments one of the highlights of the day was the ‘Have-a-go’ races (pictured).

Mrs Smith said: “Our youngsters showed their competitive streak in the races whilst others looked into other sporting possibilities with the Bowls, Golf and Tennis clubs all showing what they offer.

“All this plus bouncy castles, Sumo suits, crafts, tea for teddy’s and more; even dogs weren’t forgotten as they joined their owners on an agility course!

“This community really does have something of interest for everyone and it was on show on Sunday.”
