ARTISTIC school pupils put their creative skills to the test for an art exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

The work on display in the art gallery in Eden depicts images of The Great War through the eyes of High Wycombe school children.

The exhibition has been organised by the High Wycombe branch of the Royal British Legion as part of its remembrance of the 100th anniversary.

“The imagination of the work created is fabulous” said branch chairman Kevin Taylor, who is appealing for the town’s youngsters to create and donate any further images which will be used in the gallery.

He added: “While we have some fabulous art, done by some very talented students, we very much want to grow and develop the event.”

The exhibition, which will move across to the Chiltern Shopping Centre in six weeks, was launched on Monday with RBL members and the Mayor of High Wycombe Cllr Khalil Ahmed.

Dignitaries, war heroes, military personnel and church figures will simultaneously lay wreaths at war memorials around the district at noon on August 4 to mark the beginning of the conflict in 1914.

Mr Taylor said: “This is an act of commemoration, remembering the fallen. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like in 1914 but we want to make sure that what they did isn’t forgotten”.

A special civic service will be held at All Saints Parish Church in High Wycombe from 9.45am on Sunday.

If you would like to submit an image or painting to be displayed in the gallery, or you would like to volunteer for the RBL’s Poppy Appeal, email hwbranch360@gmail.com or call 01494448863.
