WELLY races, craft stalls and a nature trail kept more than 30 families from Bourne End and Wooburn Green entertained at a community picnic last weekend.

Organised by the Friends of Slate Meadow, village residents decided it would be a nice idea to make the most of the designated village green on the meadow, which currently separates the two villages.

Slate Meadow has been an area of much debate this year with Wycombe District Council including the former greenbelt land in their local plan for proposed development.

Suggestions were made in the plan that a possible 175 homes could be built on the area.

In an attempt to prove that the meadow is important to the community, the picnic was organised.

One of the event’s organisers, Tom Dredge, said “We wanted to organize an event that shows the versatility of Slate Meadow. “As a designated village green, all of the local residents have a right to use the land for pastimes and activities.

“We also wanted to highlight to WDC that Slate Meadow is important to us as both a separation between the communities of Wooburn Green and Bourne End and a place that can bring those communities together.”

One of the highlights of the day was the Wet Welly Race with a King and Queen of Wooburn Green both being crowned.

Mr Dredge was crowned King, while Lyla Baker was given the honour of Queen.

Organisers said families also enjoyed the many craft events and the Slate Meadow nature trail.
