LISTED below are some of the First World War Centenary events and services being held in south Bucks over the coming days.

Sunday, August 3:

RADNAGE: RBL is holding a memorial service at 11am, followed by an open day. There will be a barbecue and live music from 2 to 4pm. The legion will be open until 6pm.

BEACONSFIELD: there will be a parade through the town and a church ceremony in which the 80 names on the Beaconsfield war memorial will be read out and a candle lit for each one.

After the ceremony, people will be invited to attend a picnic lunch on the Windsor End Green, with music to be played by the Chiltern Hills Brass Band.

The commemoration service is due to start at 12pm at St Mary's Church, with the parade set to begin at the rugby club at Windsor End shortly before then.

A special service will be held at St. Dunstan’s Church, Monks Risborough at 6 pm, the eve of the outbreak of war. The service will include readings, music, prayers and hymns.

CHESHAM: Market Square, which will start with a procession and music at 11.30am. At midday the newly re-hung Town Bell will be struck, followed by a multi-faith service at midday. This will include the reading of Chesham's fatality list, poetry readings and the laying of flowers of remembrance.

There will be a World War One exhibition, focusing on the start of the war, at Chesham Museum from 11am to 4pm.

The World War One display at Chesham Cemetery will be available to view from 10am til midday and then from 1 to 4pm.

A service of Reflection & Prayers for Peace will be held at St. Mary's at 6pm.

Chesham United Reformed Church (in partnership with Trinity Baptist Church) will be hosting a communion service at 6pm and a vigil from 7pm to midnight.

Monday, August 4:

RESIDENTS and businesses are being urged to turn off the lights and leave a candle burning to mark the outbreak of the First World War.

Wycombe District Council is backing Lights Out, a nationwide initiative urging people to burn a single candle in darkness between 10pm and 11pm on August 4 to commemorate the start of the war.

The campaign was inspired by the words of British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey from the window of his Whitehall office on the eve of The Great War.

He said: "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."

High Wycombe:

All Saints Church Start at the war memorial at All Saints Church at 9:45pm with an introduction to Lights Out and a brief prayer prior to the buglar playing the Last Post at 10pm precisely to signify the commencement of the hour. This will be followed by a silent progression into church to light a candle and carry it to the platform area of the church to commence the reflection of WW1.

This will comprise some poems/readings while WWI images are displayed via a projector and some silent reflection. It will conclude with a night prayer, extinguishing of the candles and leaving the church in silence. The Church tower will be illuminated in red and the street lights manually extinguished.

WDC offices, Queen Victoria Rd A single light will be lit between 10pm and 11pm in the central window of Committee Room 1, facing onto Queen Victoria Road. The Council offices' (building A) external lights will be switched off for the entire evening.

Eden Shopping Centre Will be turning off its car park roof lights and external building lights in the centre. Weather permitting a single candle will be lit in Eden Place from 10pm to 11pm.

High Wycombe Bid Co A single light will be lit between 10pm and 11pm in the central window in Little Market House.

Wycombe Museum, Priory Avenue A single light will be lit in a window on the first floor of the Museum between 10pm and 11pm.

Street lights in the town centre In Church Street (around All Saints Church and War Memorial), High Street (around Little Market House) and Queen Victoria Road, the street lights will be off. They will be turned back on after 11pm.

MARLOW: Royal British Legion will be holding a service between 10pm and 11pm on Monday.

CHESHAM: At 8.15pm there will be a candle-lit parade from Market Square to the War Memorial, followed by a service of remembrance.

PRINCES RISBOROUGH: At 10pm for one hour the St.Mary’s Church floodlighting will be turned off and a lighted candle will be placed at the main doors of the church and the names of those men from Princes Risborough who gave their lives during this conflict will be displayed. Join them if you can.

RADNAGE: At 10pm the Radnage RBL will light a candle at the memorial from 10 to 11pm. The legion will also be open to the public from 8 to 11pm.

FLACKWELL HEATH: Villagers are being asked to meet in the Royal British Legion in Common Road at 9pm. At 9.30pm there will be a short service by Reverend Chris Bull. This will be followed by a candlelit procession to the war memorial with a bag piper at 9.50pm.Last post to be played by bugler.There will then be an hour’s vigil for anyone who would like to stay between 10 and 11pm.

Other events include:

LACEY GREEN: A special service will be held at St. John’s Church, Lacey Green at 12pm. The service will include readings, music, prayers and hymns.

HAZLEMERE: Also at 11am the RBL Hazlemere and District branch is holding a short memorial service on the back common, Tylers Green.

Dignitaries, military personnel past and present and church figures will be laying wreaths at war memorials around the Wycombe District at noon.
