IN High Wycombe the Lighthouse week took place for the fourth year at Highcrest Academy in Hatters Lane.

More than 250 volunteers provided support for 470 children taken part in activities throughout the week from music to sport.

There were also Christian teachings in both large and small groups.

The age range is from four up to 11. When children reach the age of 12, they can enlist as a helper- a Lamplighter- who assist Lighthouse Keepers, who are aged 16 and up.

About 100 toddlers were also entertained at St. Andrew's Church across the road with their parents/carers in Little Lighthouse.

Trustee Colin Hingston said: "For the first time this year, training workshops were held for 11-year-olds culminating in periods of help for younger age groups towards the end of the week, with a view to them coming on board as Lamplighters next year.

"These proved very popular, and helped to keep existing Lamplighters on their toes as some of the kids now knew all the rules they were supposed to follow."

A team of specialist helpers also maintained The Space for children with special needs.

As far as possible, these children participate in their year groups, with one-to-one help if necessary, and the dedicated room decked out with drapes and soft furnishings is for those who find the mainstream activities too much at times.

Lighthouse takes place for a week every summer at various locations in the district. For more details go to
