VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help with the organisation of a day of celebration for Bucks' older residents.

Silver Sunday is a nationwide scheme aimed at celebrating older people and their contribution to the communities in which they live.

The brainchild of Westminster councillor Christabel Flight, the scheme was set up in 2012 but no events have been held in Bucks so far.

Former Amersham Mayor Mimi Harker is organising a Silver Sunday event in her home town on October 5 but is looking for help.

She hopes to organise a 1940s-style tea dance and is on the lookout for a brass band to play, volunteers to decorate the venue and transport residents to the event, and businesses to contribute donations to help it get off the ground.

Cllr Harker said: "This will be the first one in Bucks - next year I'm hoping people all over Bucks will do a similar event in their area.

"It's one of the most exciting new events to be happening in Bucks in a long time. A lot of people will benefit a lot from it."

Anyone who is able to help can contact Cllr Harker on mimi.harker@btconnect.com or 07798892749.
