Live electrics were exposed in a High Wycombe road yesterday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the damaged road bollard, where the electrics were exposed from, at the junction of Mill End Road and Gallows Lane.
One crew from High Wycombe attended after being called at about 3.30pm.
The situation was left with Transport for Buckinghamshire.
Dan Elworth, Transport for Buckinghamshire spokesman, said: “A street lighting crew attended Mill End Road, High Wycombe... at 3.45pm as an illuminated bollard was reported as smoking.
“On arrival the team found that the bollard had been damaged previously and had allowed recent rain water to enter the bollard, causing electrics in the base to start smoking.
“The street lighting team isolated the bollard base and made the traffic island safe.
“The illuminated bollard will now be added to a programme of works to be replaced.”
