A DAUGHTER who is a carer for her terminally ill mother has shaved off her hair to raise money for a cancer charity.

Kellie Evans entrusted her sister, Rosie Williams, to shave off her long locks and with support from family and friends has raised almost £1,000 for Stand up to Cancer, despite originally setting a target of just £50.

Even with all the money raised, Ms Evans says that it was not a brave thing to do when compared to people - like her mother Anjie Barrichello - who live with the illness.

She said: “I am very thankful for all the help and support from everyone who has helped with doing this.

“The aim was just to raise money for the charity and hopefully make a difference.

“As I have said before, shaving my hair off is not a brave thing to do, people like mum who live with cancer every day, they are the brave ones.”

Ms Evans was originally planning to have the haircut in front of friends and residents of Holtspur care home Kiln Court, where Mrs Barrichello has lived for almost two years.

However, they changed their plans when a number of relatives travelled across the country to be with the family earlier on Wednesday, October 15.

This did not halt the fundraising process though and Kellie shocked residents by whipping off a wig to reveal her new look.

Ms Evans said: “There was an initial shock when I realised my hair had been cut off, but I have had quite a nice response with lots of people saying it suits me.”

The fundraising effort was also helped by a cake sale, raffle and the auction of tickets donated from Bekonscot Model Village.

Anjie also helped the cause by selling some of the paintings she had been working on.
