THE fallen World War One heroes of a South Bucks village will each be remembered by the community after it was arranged for the church bells to be tolled on the centenary anniversary of their deaths.

Although remembered nationally on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, in November, Flackwell Heath is planning to honour each man individually.

Following a proposal from the Flackwell Heath and Loudwater Local History Group, Reverend Christopher Bull will toll the church bell for two minutes on every anniversary.

This will see all 50 men who are honoured on the village war memorial have their own unique moment of remembrance.

Rev Bull said: “In August, to commemorate the start of the First World War, we rang the bell once for each person.

“By doing this again on the day of the centenary of each of their deaths the village will be able to remember each individual.

“It was first brought to my attention by the Local History Group and I think it is a really nice way to commemorate these people, who should not be forgotten.

“As a nation we always look at the big picture and we remember everyone who died as a collective.

“But, by looking at the small picture we should remember each person, who had families and connections to this village.”

He first heard of the proposal from the LHG chairman and Bucks Free Press Nostalgia expert Mike Dewey, after a group member researched each name on the memorial.

Mr Dewey said: “We were looking for ways to remember the servicemen who were killed during the First World War.

“After the research into every individual was completed we spoke to the church and they agreed it was a good idea.

“We have not heard of any other places doing this and I think it is a nice way to remember the individuals from this village.”

The collected research will be presented to the church on Sunday, November 9, this year.

The first commemoration will be on Thursday, November 6.

Following each commemoration the group will also be displaying information in the Community Library, in Chapel Road.
