SHOPPERS in Marlow can be rest assured their money is going to good use nearby after a supermarket chose a town charity group as its good cause of the year.

Marlow Sea Cadets were chosen to receive Sainsbury’s funding after store bosses asked customers to nominate a charities in the area.

And now the young recruits are set to benefit from a slice of more than £6million raised since the supermarket giant launched its Local Charity Partner scheme five years ago.

Inviting the cadets to the West Street store after the announcement, store manager Matt McBride said: "We are delighted to have chosen the Marlow Sea Cadets as this year’s Local Charity Partner.

"After careful review, the Marlow Sea Cadets was selected due to its outstanding work with youth in our community.

"Sainsbury’s Marlow is committed to supporting the Marlow unit through fundraising and volunteering through to June 2015."

The Marlow unit of the Sea Cadets was formed in 1956 to provide young people with the opportunity to enjoy ‘nautical recreation’.

Though based on the high standards of the Royal Navy - which supplies uniforms and boating equipment - the force does not provide funding.

Bob Savidge, Treasurer & Trustee of the group which meets twice a week at its Wethered Road headquarters, said the decision is a justification of the hard work put in by cadets and trainers.

He said: "Marlow Sea Cadets has been valuable to our community for a great many years and it is terrific to receive acknowledgement from Sainsbury’s Marlow.

"We look forward to working in partnership with the Marlow store to raise awareness and collect donations."

Donations are currently being collected at each checkout in the store, with all hands on deck as cadets help bag groceries and collect further pledges to boost fundraising.

And the partners are plotting future collaborations including taking part in special festive events.

Sea cadets are aged from 10 to 18 years of both sexes. For more information on joining the Marlow Sea Cadets please see the website www.sea-cadets.org/marlow.
