VOLUNTEERS and councillors behind the new £500,000 cycle network in Beaconsfield have been recognised nationally for their hard work and have now received two awards.
Members of the Beaconsfield Cycle Paths Action Group worked closely with Bucks County Council, Sustrans and Chiltern Railways to improve the cycle links across the town.
The new Beaconsfield cycle network was officially opened last week by BCC Leader Martin Tett on Saturday, November 8.
It was a day of celebration for all behind the work to get the scheme adopted.
Improvements have been made around Station Road, Grove Road, Burkes Road, Maxwell Road and Ellwood Road.
These changes include new cycle parking, cycle lanes, signs, traffic calming, raised pedestrian crossings, and a mini roundabout, which is said to make it easier for commuters to cycle to the station and safer for walkers, cyclists and motorists.
The new network has been praised for supporting sustainable travel and it has also been held up nationally as a good community partnership project.
The accolades came at a national sustainable travel conference in Birmingham on Friday, November 7, where the cycle network scheme won two of seven runner-up Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Awards.
Modeshift's annual awards recognise schemes, projects and other activities that support and encourage sustainable travel, by highlighting best practice, showing innovation and being inspirational.
Ruth Vigor-Hedderly, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “What a great moment for a great partnership.
“Everyone has worked hard to create a cycle network that serves the residents of Beaconsfield well, and I applaud them.”
As part of the scheme, in April SBDC leader Adrian Busby unveiled new under-cover cycle parking at Beaconsfield railway station, doubling the number of spaces to 180 after Chiltern Railways stepped in.
BCC are due to present the awards to the action group at 8pm on Wednesday, November 26.
The group say anyone is welcome to attend the presentation at High March School in Ledborough Lane, Beaconsfield.
