A GROUP dedicated to preserving the memory of World War One in Marlow has revealed it plans to hold graveside vigils for fallen soldiers from the town.

Marlow Remembers World War One already acknowledges the death of each solider on the hundredth anniversary of their death by placing a named tribute at the War Memorial on the Causeway.

And members want to do the same by the graves of the 25 war casualties from Marlow that are buried in the town’s cemetery, off Wethered Road.

Marlow's Royal British Legion branch chairman, Shaun Murphy, who is on the committee, said: "In some cases there is a grave but no body in it if the solider died abroad. It gives a focus for the family to grieve.

"We are encouraging families to research their own histories since making a lot of the information available.

"It’s all in line with our commemorations during the centenary, we do what we can."

Marlow Town Council, which is responsible for the cemetery, has agreed to tidy up the graves ahead of the commemorations.

A short ceremony will be held at the gravesides at 11am on the appropriate day, to be led primarily by group member John Bustin.

The commemoration will consist of the reading of the name of the individual followed by a description of his personal and family history.

This to be followed by a prayer, the reading of a relevant poem and the placement of a Royal British Legion wooden cross.

An invite to each occasion will be extended to the Royal British Legion and schools in the area.

The graves of servicemen buried elsewhere in the town and in Great Marlow will also be considered for the same recognition.
