Simple but sensible actions this Christmas could prevent you from becoming a Yuletide crime statistic, residents in Bucks are being warned.

Chiltern and South Bucks Community Safety team have plenty of suggestions to make sure your celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons.

Cllr Peter Hudson, Chiltern District Council’s cabinet member for community, said: “For most, Christmas is a time of giving.

“Sadly, for the criminally-minded, it’s a great opportunity to help themselves. This is time when we all like to have a good time, but I would urge everyone not to let your guard down, take action to avoid becoming a victim – and do consider those less fortunate than yourself.”

Among the tips being issued to help your festive perriod remain crime free are the following:

  • Put timer switches on lights for when you are out or away
  • Invest in a fake TV simulator
  • Get a trusted neighbour to pop in to draw curtains if you stay away.
  • Recycle wrappings carefully – don’t advertise the purchases you’ve made or pressies received by putting out packaging days ahead of collections.
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers at hand in case you need them
  • Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, particularly if they are alone over Xmas
  • Always book taxis with a reputable company

Be aware of hidden alcohol in puddings, cakes and chocolates and if in doubt, leave the car behind.
