Underprivileged children in Kenya will once again be supported by a church group from Wooburn Green this summer as volunteers travel to help the youngsters.

Since 2010 a group from St Paul’s Church have visited the Hilton Slum in Nakuru, Kenya, every year with visitors taking clothes and shoes for the children.

This year, seven will be making the trip in July with one family hoping to spread the word about the challenges the children face.

Wullie Wilson (pictured handing out shoes in last year’s visit), who will be visiting with three members of his family alongside another family, said the volunteers were left heartbroken when they first heard of the awful living conditions for the Kenyan families.

He said: “I was fortunate to go there last year with a party led by Nik Anyon - a trustee of the charity The Walk Centre - all I can say is that I was a wreck - it broke my heart.

“My wife Samantha along with friends from the church and neighbourhood run a workshop which turn pillowcases into girl’s dresses and men’s t-shirts into boy’s shorts [ahead of the trip].

“Last year we took out 204 dresses and about the same in shorts.”

He added they also had support from St Pauls School, Dropmore School and a few other outlets who supplied us with children’s second hand shoes.

This year the seven travelling over to Kenya will continue to take suitcases of clothes and other items, but are also asking for donations to help fund school meals, essential medical treatment or vital water supplies.
