The second inquest into the death of a man who died in police custody will begin next week – nearly seven years after he passed away.

Habib Ullah, known to family and friends as “Paps”, died during a police stop and search on July 3, 2008.

An inquest was originally held in December 2010 but had to be abandoned after it was revealed that officers altered parts of their statements following legal advice.

In August, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided there was insufficient evidence to charge any individual in relation to Mr Ullah's death or in relation to allegations of perverting the course of justice.

Another inquest has been scheduled to start on Monday at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission’s investigation is currently underway into the five officers’ conduct.

Zia Ullah, Cousin of Paps, said: “It seems incongruous that we have to wait this long for an inquest process to finish and a verdict to be given.

“The circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the inquest and the CPS decision not to put the officers on trial makes it feel that we are back to square one in this process.

“We hope that this inquest will provide us a verdict that vindicates how we feel and gives us some closure.”
