A pensioner at a Marlow health club left some of the world’s fittest people trailing in his wake by winning a major world fitness title.

Super-fit 70-year-old Tony Linturn, who trains at the Marlow Club, trumped a 26-year-old American to take the ‘Movers of 2014’ top spot.

Former endurance athlete Mr Linturn worked out he needed to hit the gym for an average of three hours a day throughout 2014 to win the cumulative distance prize.

His fitness career includes completing the London Marathon in two hours, 31 minutes and total running hours equal to lapping the globe 22 times.

And along with 62-year old training partner Mike Peachy - who came fourth - Tony took only four days off training during 2014 in his bid to cover more ground than participants across the world.

He said: "Having Mike and everyone at The Marlow Club, especially my spinning group, supporting me throughout the challenge made the world of difference and kept me going until the end."

"Doing this challenge was the toughest thing I have done in my life but it did mean I got to eat five jam doughnuts a night as a treat!

"This is the type of challenge I enjoy and I’m pleased I can still do it at 70 years of age so I’m hoping my story will only inspire others". As well as hitting the streets in his bid for the crown, Mr Linturn became a familiar face at the Fieldhouse Lane gym where he attended spinning classes.

The Marlow Club’s Steven Smith said: "We loved supporting Tony throughout his year-long challenge yet always ensuring he was training safely, to his optimum endurance levels - which is higher than most of our younger members!"

"Tony is a real asset to our club and everyone here would like to congratulate him on such a fantastic personal achievement."
