A wasp, butterfly and ladybird landed in a primary school playing field to open a new ‘minibeast’ hotel in Holtspur on Friday.

The insects looked right at home after spreading their wings and heading to the Holtspur Hilton for a rest.

As part of a learning hub project for Holtspur School, children dressed up and also took part in other minibeast activities.

Following a ‘celebration’ assembly for parents and pupils, the young insects seemed happy to fly the coop in search of the grand opening.

School Outdoor Learning Leader Fiona O'Reilly said: “The school council and their parents came together to build a Minibeast Hotel from scrap and unused natural materials.

“This is part of our drive to establish outdoor learning as an integral part of life at Holtspur School.”

She added: “Our hub will eventually consist of a pond, minibeast hotel, outdoor learning room, recently planted orchard, and wildlife garden.”

The school’s parents and teachers association are currently fundraising in order to build an outdoor learning and science room.

As part of a school competition Olivia in Year Six and Gabriella in Year One came up with the winning names of 'The Nest - an exploratory laboratory'.
