Village police officers will be patrolling on the beat of a heart for years to come after a new defibrillator was installed on the side of the station.

Alongside Iver Parish Council, Thames Valley Police have purchased the life-saving equipment in a bid to provide treatment for those suffering from a cardiac arrest.

Officers in High Street, Iver, will be maintaining the equipment after a former PCSO championed the purchase of the defibrillator following his own heart attack two years ago.

Bill Pretty, who is still employed by the force, suffered a cardiac arrest in November 2013 and has been part of the team who have campaigned to have the equipment installed in the area, with the parish council providing the funding.

According to the British Heart Foundation, the portable defibrillators are simple and safe, giving untrained users clear spoken instructions.

Once in position, the defibrillator detects the heart's rhythm and it won't deliver a shock unless one is needed.
