Firefighters in Bucks are urging people to take care when charging e-cigarettes following a product recall and a small explosion dealt with by crews last week.

Earlier this month, the charity Electrical Safety First announced a recall of the mains adaptor supplied with ClearSmoke e-cigarettes.

Then on Thursday evening, an unknown brand of e-cigarette exploded and caused fire damage to the floor of a house in Newport Road, New Bradwell, while being charged. It had been on charge for between 60 and 90 minutes.

The e-cigarette and USB charger had been bought from a market stall in Central Milton Keynes earlier in the day. They came without a mains adaptor, so the USB was plugged into a mains adaptor from a different kit.

The incident is being investigated by Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service and Milton Keynes Trading Standards.

Firefighters are asking e-cigarette users to remember never to leave them charging unattended for long periods, not to mix components of different e-cigarette kits and only to use the charger supplied.

They are also warned to ensure they buy the product from a reputable source, to check it carries CE (Conformité Européenne) certification to keep them away from things that can burn easily and out of the reach of children.

Contact Trading Standards on 03454 040506 (Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm) if you have concerns about an e-cigarette kit you have bought.
