For the first time a junior week will be held this year as part of the Bourne End regatta week. Until now it has been an adults only event.

Plans for the 2007 sailing week were announced by the Upper Thames Sailing Club (UTSC) last week.

The inaugural Junior Bourne End Week will run from Thursday, May 31 to Saturday, June 2 - straight after the adult event which is from from Saturday May 26 to Wednesday, May 30. The dates conveniently coincide with May half term.

Roy Burnham of UTSC, said: "We're targeting 11 to 18-year-olds as there is a lot interest of in sailing among them at the moment - especially with 14-year old Michael Perham sailing across the Atlantic recently. We're playing on that to some extent.

"The 2012 Olympics are coming and sailing is a successful British sport so it's a good time to encourage young people."

The adult event will see two races each day from Saturday to Tuesday for a variety of boats. There will be team racing on Monday and the Queen's Cup event on Wednesday as well as social events each evening.

The junior events will include fun racing, a treaure hunt, an under 18s regatta and team racing.
