Details have emerged about the route riders will take when a major national cycling tour comes to south Bucks in June.

Last month, cyclists hailed the “exciting” news that the final stage of the Friends Life Women’s Tour would start in Marlow on June 21.

Setting off from the High Street, the riders will head west along the A4155 and wind their way through the surrounding villages of Hambleden, Skirmett, Frieth and Fingest.

The gruelling 64-mile final stage on Sunday, June 21 will then head through Lane End and Stokenchurch before snaking its way around Princes Risborough.

Riders will then trek through the Chilterns via Chesham before sprinting toward the finish at Hemel Hempstead.

Cllr Julia Adey, Wycombe District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community, said: “We are really excited to be hosting the start of the final stage of the Friends Life Women’s Tour in Marlow.

“They can certainly expect a very warm welcome from local residents and businesses who I’m sure will be out in force, cheering them on.

“It’s going to be a great privilege to see elite athletes in action in a major national sporting event, on our very own doorsteps.”

Last year’s Women’s Tour featured stars including London 2012 medallist Lizzie Armitstead, and was won by Dutch rider Marianne Vos.

Ron Woodland, founder of club Marlow Riders, said the arrival of some of the world’s best cyclists would give the sport a huge boost in Marlow.
