A baton relay celebrating 100 years of the Women’s Institute will stop off in Marlow next week as it winds its way through the UK.

As the hugely successful movement notches up its century, groups across Buckinghamshire were asked where they should parade the ceremonial baton.

And the Marlow Common branch suggested their member Angela McGhee bring the party to Marlow in her classic MG, which will arrive in Higginson Park on Tuesday afternoon around 4pm.

Marlow Common WI secretary Mary Fletcher said: “We thought it would work well to stop off in Marlow as it is so picturesque and we have sent invitations out to other groups to come along.

“There’s a lot of people putting in a lot of effort for this and so we’re very pleased about it.”

Since its formation, the WI has been instrumental in campaigning for equal pay among women, fighting AIDS and banning smoking in public places.

The group is thriving in Bucks, with 139 WIs in the county federation.

The Centenary Baton travelling around the country visiting each county and their WI groups as the group celebrates a century since the first UK branch opened in 1915.

After picking up county WI chairman Jenny Street as the baton is handed over from Oxford, the pair will travel through the county, also stopping off in High Wycome and Aylesbury.

It will continue its journey and eventually reach the Royal Albert Hall for the NFWI Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 4.
