A speeding motorist pleaded with police to hand him a ticket during a week-long operation that saw Marlow police clock 140 motorists driving too fast.

Sgt Robin Hughes, who coordinated the enforcement around Stokenchurch, Lane End and rural roads near Marlow, said the public response to the crackdown was “fantastic”.

He said the worst culprit was caught driving 57mph in a 30mph limit at Mill End.

And one embarrassed motorist thanked officers for slapping him with a fine after he had previously called for a clampdown in the area.

Sgt Hughes said: “From a public point of view it has been very successful, we have had a fantastic response, even from some of those that got tickets.

“One gentlemen in Stokenchurch asked us to give him a ticket because he said he was one of the people that complains about speeding on that road.

“We’ve had great support and I have had people contacting me from other areas asking us to come there.

“It’s all very positive but it’s a shame to have 140 speeders in a week, especially some going over 50 in a 30 which is horrendous. But the message seems to be getting through.”

During the campaign, police also handed out five penalties for drivers using their phones at the wheel.

Sgt Hughes said the operation will continue in Marlow next week, with the focus switching from rural road to built up areas.

And the crackdown will specifically target areas around schools, after National Speeding Awareness Week coincided with pupils returning to class after the Easter break.
