First time buyers struggling to get a foot on the property ladder might want to look away now, after a riverside abbey near Marlow featuring a cinema, gym, bar, spa, pool and private dock went up for sale.

Bidding is now open on.Medmenham Abbey, built on the site of an abbey founded in 1204 and once rented by Sir Francis Dashwood.

The riverfront property features eight master bedroom suites and also has a library, gym, music room, a housekeeper’s cottage and offices, and is set in 42 acres with 0.67 miles of private river frontage.

And this slice of history can be yours for something over £10m.

The abbey was also rented by Lord Le de Spencer, and in the early 1700s was restored for him by Italian artists.

It was here that he founded the famous brotherhood of ‘the Knights of St Francis of Wycombe’ in 1745 with the motto of love and friendship.

This profligate society was limited to 24 members of rank and fashion, mostly resident in the neighbourhood, who resorted to Medmenham Abbey during the summer months.
