The renovation of an old village pub in south Buckinghamshire has had a far-reaching effect on Bucks Free Press readers – with one American observer now looking back nostalgically at his own memories of the well known watering hole.

The Old Bell in Wooburn Green has been turned into a hotel and bar by its current owners, but its five century old history appears to have left a mark on the world.

Michael Sweet from New Hampshire, in the USA, read with interest when he saw the news about the change, and it reminded him of a British tourism poster he bought more than 25 years ago.

The picture, which he purchased for £5, shows a Triumph parked outside The Old Bell – the very same as the famous Wooburn Green establishment.

He said: “I have spent many wonderful holidays in Bucks with my friends.

“In past years, I've gone through Wooburn Green and never seemed to remember this old British Tourism poster I've had for over 25 years.

“I'm an Anglophile and at the time a Triumph owner so I didn't hesitate to buy it.

“I love the time and feeling it evokes of driving down beautiful country lanes and stopping at a historic pub in one of Britain's greatest sports cars.

“It just doesn't get better than that.”

He added: “I believe it's the same place, though I know The Bell is probably the most popular name for a pub there.

“The great thing I love about the UK is how things stay the same - a picture taken years back looks virtually the same as today - without speed cameras, of course.

“Maybe someone local remembers this happening on the day if it is indeed the one.”
