A spate of “outrageous” vandalism which has seen more than 300 cars damaged in High Wycombe over two months has been labelled as “inexcusable” by MP Steve Baker.

The Conservative MP, who was re-elected for a second term last week, said the criminal damage “threatens community relations and harmony”.

His comments follow news that a further 36 vehicles had their windows smashed this week, taking the total to more than 300.

Mr Baker said: “I will be very happy to work with anyone to help stamp it out, primarily it’s the task of the police, but, I must observe that people from every section of our community have been affected.

“These criminals are harming people who really can’t afford the cost or inconvenience of having this damage to their vehicles. It’s absolutely inexcusable what’s being done.

“I think there’s a good chance all of us could pay the price for this. I would very much like the perpetrators to be brought to justice in a proper manner and sentenced as heavily as the law allows.

“But it does require, of course, all the proper evidence to convict. I would ask everybody to keep an eye out for people they may see around, who may be acting suspiciously, or perhaps even be a perpetrator.

“People should take all the details they can and be willing to give evidence to the police.”

When the spate of cars were vandalised in early March, police said it was believed the damage was related to the conclusion of an inquest about Habib Ullah, who died while in police custody.

However, it has since been suggested that the link is tenuous, and it is not known how many people have been carrying out the attacks.

Mr Baker added: “My belief is that this is just reckless criminality which is separate from that incident, although the perpetrators appear to have tried to associate themselves with various causes in the past.

“But, there is simply no excuse for this criminal damage.

“I don’t think we’ve known sustained criminality as bad as this in the eight years or so now that I’ve been associated with Wycombe.”
