A High Wycombe grammar school which is well-known for producing a number of sporting stars has just been given a cash boost to create a new all weather pitch facility.

The Royal Grammar School, in Amersham Road, has been given £150,000 after being selected among a number of national sports projects to secure a share of £10 million.

In the past they have helped hone the skills of a number of athletes, including Rugby World Cup winner Matt Dawson and current Wasps flyer Christian Wade.

The National Lottery funding will be used to create an all weather pitch on site, providing not only RGS pupils, but clubs and schools with a safe, floodlit area to play and enjoy sports, with a particular emphasis on Hockey.

Headmaster, Roy Page, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can create a new, much needed facility to match the quality of our pupils aspirations as well as the needs of our local community groups.

“It is the cornerstone of our facilities strategy to have an outstanding sports and recreational space for all to use.

“This pitch will provide an all-year, all-weather ‘outdoor classroom’, recreational space and training facility. Its multipurpose function enables a wide range of sports to be played, with floodlights providing after-school training facilities.

“It has the potential to encourage better development of team sports whatever the weather and this is part of our strategic plan for the school.”

Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country.

“Since 2011, we’ve invested £94 million into more than 1,800 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs.

“It’s great to see the Royal Grammar School High Wycombe join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.”
