A CAR burst into flames after a crash this evening on the A404 close to Amersham Crematorium.

A green VW Polo was believed to have been in collision with a blue motorbike at the junction with Whielden Lane, towards Winchmore Hill.

Traffic was at a near standstill, as fire crews and an ambulance rushed to the scene.

It is unknown at this stage whether or not there have been casualties.

Police have so far been unable to confirm any details.

Traffic has been allowed through, but police have been stationed at either end of the junction with Whielden Lane to control the flow.

Recovery vehicles have now taken the car and bike away, and traffic has begun to ease.

Barry Jones, of nearby Whielden Gate, said the collision, which happened around rush hour in the early evening, had gone off like a 'shotgun'.

He said he was on his front lawn gardening at the time when he heard a loud noise.

"It was like a gun going off - a shotgun.

"I heard it and I thought 'oh dear' and I went out there and saw the smoke coming out of the top."

Mr Jones described the location as an 'accident blackspot'.

A 32-year-old woman in a passing vehicle told us: "One car was on fire. It was pretty messed up. There was nothing left of it.

"Another vehicle was seen sitting in a grass verge."
