Partygoers at Marlow Town Regatta were treated to an extra special appearance this morning as the Queen’s royal barge passed through the town.

As part of the 800th anniversary celebrations of the sealing of the Magna Carta, a flotilla made its way down the Thames, led by the magnificent Gloriana.

Marlow rower and Paralympic gold medallist Naomi Riches took an oar to form part of the rowing squad on the first leg of the journey, which will see the barge head on to Runnymede tomorrow for formal celebrations with the Royal family.

Crowds lined the bank to witness the spectacle, with onlookers also taking to Marlow Bridge as the barge passed underneath.

The gilded 94-foot craft was privately commissioned as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II for her Diamond Jubilee, and was the lead vessel in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant along the Thames in London.

The barge set off from Hurley, with stops at Bisham Abbey and Cookham before heading on to Maidenhead for the end of the first day’s relay.

Honorary charter bearers joined on board for the journey, with Ila Gangotra and daughters Anisha Gangotra and Trishna Bharadia, all from Marlow, chosen for their charity and community work.
