Experts plotting a multi-million pound upgrade to Marlow’s notorious traffic blackspot say there is no "magic bullet" to solving the growing problem.

Unveiling three possible options for new road layouts at the A404 Bisham roundabout, Highways England said the measures would only be a "short to medium term" option and a major overhaul may be needed.

The government company plans to spend up to £6million improving traffic flow at the junction of the A404 – one of the busiest non-motorway routes in the country – which Bisham residents complain is increasingly dangerous.

Bisham roundabout is the only one of its kind on the major trunk road, and is now considered obsolete given the volume of traffic using the A404.

But scheme asset manager Surinder Bhangu says to fully solve the problems, a £150m motorway style flyover junction would be needed to fully ease congestion problems at the spot.

He said: "We had a comprehensive report with eight options, but there is no magic bullet here. There are always pluses and minuses.

"The key is the existing roundabout has to be made into a bigger junction. But we’re looking at a short to medium term option.

"For something more substantial in future, we need further studies to take place.”

He said the new options will prevent people from “taking their lives into their hands” when leaving the village, which he admitted can be “quite scary”.

Highways England held an exhibition at Bisham Abbey and Bisham School outlining the three possible options, which they are now seeking feedback on.

Option one sees a traffic light system with staggered lights around the roundabout.

The second choice is gives traffic emerging from Bisham and from Maidenhead their own slip road run-up before joining traffic.

And the last option is a full traffic light-controlled crossroads, which would A404 traffic priority to keep the road moving.

Mr Bhangu added that a full scale review launched by the Government is likely to include the whole A404 route.
