A community festival held in Frogmoor could be moved to the High Street from next year.

During a High Wycombe Town Committee meeting at Wycombe District Council, a mooted proposal by organisers HWBidco to move Frogfest further into the town received support from councillors.

The event was started in 2013 and each year crowds have grown, with a number of musical performances and attractions on offer for people of all ages.

Suggested reasons for the movement included a larger crowd capacity, more involvement with High Wycombe businesses and offering a chance to bring more visitors to the High Street.

Mayor of High Wycombe, Cllr Mohammed Hanif, said: “I had the opportunity to go and attend the Frogmoor festival and obviously it was better attended [than before], there was a lot of activities – it was quite vibrant.

“I think what Oliver [O’Dell, HWBidco] expressed is that he needs the participation of local businesses. They will need more money to stage a bigger show.

“And again, change is healthy, so a new venue in the High Street could be good. In comparison, it looks quite dull at the moment, the High Street, so let’s try it there and see if it succeeds.”

Conservative, Cllr Marten Clarke, representing Ryemead, said: “I think that the suggestion of having Frogfest on the High Street is a jolly good idea.

“It will clear the problems on Frogmoor, which is an open road. The High Street of course is pedestrianised and we have the chance to go down into Paul’s Row as well.”

Labour Cllr Sebert Graham, representing Oakridge and Castlefield, said: “I support the idea of moving to the High Street, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about Frogmoor and I do hope we find something else to go round Frogmoor because that’s a place which needs to be developed as well.”

Cllr Andrea Baughman, an East Wycombe Independent representative for Micklefield, added: “It’s a brilliant festival, it’s got a lovely atmosphere.

“I liked it on Frogmoor because you can get a natural amphitheatre, but if we are looking for a biggest festival with more food and others things then I think the High Street, Paul’s Row and the associated areas would be a great venue.”

Committee chairman, councillor Tony Green, said: “It is generally believed it’s got better exposure and become more successful, it certainly had more people this year than in previous years.”
