A large “plague” of flying ants has taken over parts of High Wycombe town centre today, according to shoppers.

Across the country people have also taken to social media to talk about the unusual sight, and it appears that south Buckinghamshire has not escaped from the flying insects.

The so called ‘Flying Ants Day’ is believed to happen during the summer months when colonies emerge from their nests.

The queen ants are normally said to fly around during this time and mate with several male ants. They then drop to the ground, where they lose their wings and try to start a new colony.
