Concerned residents and councillors have spoken out over a "dangerous" country lane where several cars have overturned in the last year, with three accidents in just one week last month.

Sheepridge Lane, which runs from Flackwell Heath to Little Marlow, has become a notorious accident blackspot.

At around 2.25pm last Monday afternoon, firefighters were called to a crash involving one car and on the same road, two cars overturned in different accidents just three hours apart during heavy rain last Thursday.

And in May this year, an 18-year-old woman was injured after a crash on the rural stretch.

Ivan Smith, who lives along the road at Pigeon House Farm, said accidents happen outside his property regularly.

He said: “So far this year there has been around ten outside Pigeon House Farm and at least another seven more elsewhere. It has been an ongoing issue for about two or three years now. I don’t see why, as residents, we should keep running the gauntlet. It is very worrying."

In the past residents have called for a review of the 60mph speed limit on the lane and have suggested a reduction.

Flackwell Heath ward councillor Jeff Herschel said the speed limit could be lowered to 40mph, but was not sure what effect that would have.

He said: “It used to be a quiet lane but it has become a real rat run. There are particular places where a lot of them happen, near the entrance to Pigeon House Farm and further up at the Crooked Billet. Even if you did reduce the speed limit, it is debatable as to whether it would reduce the number of accidents.

“I worked to get the cats' eyes on the road replaced in the hope that this would reduce accidents along there. I am not sure if it has, but I hope so.”

District councillor, John Savage, said that while it may not necessarily be speed that causes accidents, drivers need to be cautious.

He said: “As it doesn’t have a conventional speed limit, it can be very dangerous, especially on the corners. The parish council have collaborated with the district councillors to try and lower the speed limit but rules and regulations have said we can’t."

Janet Smith, chair of the Flackwell Heath Residents Association said the road is “very windy” and the issue of accidents has been discussed numerous times at committee meetings.

She said:”We have got big concerns about this road. New developments in Marlow have seen more construction traffic using the route and the road is getting busier.

“There are some parts of the road that have lots of trees and hedges, which can make it harder to navigate. As a local group, all we can do is voice the concerns of residents to the relevant authorities.

“We are in contact with the Neighbourhood Action Group and they are going to contact the Highways Agency to see if there is anything that can be done about it. It is a dangerous road and not all of the accidents that happen there are reported.

“It is a bit of a worry but it is a difficult road to police, even if they did lower the speed limit.”
