Students at Bucks New University have presented two charities with cheques totalling £4,000 after a year-long fundraising campaign.

The Student Union’s ‘Raise and Give’ (RAG) project saw medical charity Serv OBN and Horizon Sports Club benefit from the funds, which were generated from events including a volleyball and a dance competition.

Lauren Troiano, volunteering & societies coordinator at Bucks New University’s Students’ Union, said: “Each year, two local charities are selected by staff and students for our annual RAG campaign. Over the past twelve months, we have been able to raise a significant amount of money for both charities through a number of activities.

“Serv OBN and Horizon Sports Club are both fantastic causes that provide vital support to our local community and we are delighted to have been able to spend the year raising awareness and money to continue their ongoing work.”

Serv OBN provides a rapid response medical transport service, delivering urgently needed medical supplies, such as blood, while Horizon Sports Club provides children and young people with disabilities the opportunity to develop physically and socially through sport.

John Sargent of Serv OBN said: “SERV OBN would like to say a huge thank you to all the students and staff of Bucks New University.

“It costs roughly £4000 a month to run and maintain our motorcycles, but that results in significantly greater savings for the hospitals both in money and time, so the fantastic sum of £2,027 has made a big contribution toward helping us to support our local NHS hospitals and their patients."

Anita Templar, founder of Horizon Sports Club, said: “Horizon is a pan-disability club which means we accept all children, from physical needs, to learning and communication disorders. We promote and develop sport to disabled children in a structured and enjoyable environment in the Wycombe District.”

Other fundraising initiatives throughout the year by Bucks New University students have included bake sales, street collections and a student football tournament known as the Bucks Cup.

A new campaign will commence this month, when two new organisations will be selected as the official RAG charities for the academic year 2015/2016.
