A charity night is being held in High Wycombe to help prevent the tragedy of young suicide.

Yasmin Harris, centre manager at Education and Youth Services (EYS) in Chesham, is organising the event this month in aid of Papyrus, the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

She said: “In the past four years I have known four young men under the age of 25 who have taken their own lives. One of them was a learner at our centre.

“This is why this charity and its work means so much to me.

“I feel too many young people are losing their lives as sometimes we just don't see what's going on around us.”

Suicide is the main cause of death in young people under the age of 35 in the UK. Between the ages and 15 and 24, the number is 600 to 800 - equivalent to the population of a small secondary school – and three-quarters of them are boys and young men.

Papyrus, which provides confidential help and advice to young people and anyone worried about a young person, says that with appropriate early intervention and support, suicide by young people can be prevented.

Ms Harris charity night is being held on Friday, September 25 at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre.

She added: “There is obviously a serious message being sent out from this event – but I'm also certain it will be be a fun night too.”

Tickets are £20 each and the evening will feature a live band and DJ along with a buffet and raffle.
