Volunteers are helping to continue High Wycombe’s long-lasting chair making heritage by unveiling a new 180-chair arch in the town.

The structure is currently being built on the grounds of a new development in Wycombe Marsh, and is set to be finished ahead of an event this weekend.

The Last Chair Arch will be shown to the public on Saturday and residents will be able to take a chair home after it is taken apart a week later.

The town’s tradition of furniture making has inspired the design with the arch being developed by residents, furniture makers and students from Bucks New University.

The first chair arch to be built in High Wycombe was believed to be in 1877 and was constructed of 400 chairs supported by a scaffold structure.

The chair arch is being assembled in Wye Dene, one of the newest parts of High Wycombe currently under construction in Wycombe Marsh.
