A St Albans station worker will be representing Great Britain in the European Iaido Championships.

Shakir Rahman, who works for Thameslink on the platforms at St Albans City station, will be taking part in the championships, which take place from October 23 in Berlin.

Iaido is a modern Japanese martial art sport and Mr Rahman has been training at the Eishinkan Dojo training centre in Abbots Langley.

Mr Rahman has also represented Team GB in jodo - another Japanese martial art sport, whereby short staffs are used and competitors strike each other directly unlike iaido.

Mr Rahman said: "It's great honour representing Team GB in both disciplines.

"Iaido andjodu test you mentally as well as physically, requiring you to be not only very precise and powerful but also graceful and in harmony with the sword or the short staff you wield."
