THE LONG-AWAITED leisure centre in High Wycombe took a step closer last week as council chiefs helped fill the new Olympic-size swimming pool.

Council leader Cllr Katrina Wood teamed up with Chief Executive Karen Satterford to pump water into the 50m pool at Wycombe Leisure Centre, which is set open in January.

More than 2.4 million litres of water were poured into the main pool, which took ten days to fill, with the training pool holding 272,000 litres of water.

The swimming area, which also features splash pads for children, is the centrepiece of the new Wycombe Leisure Centre at the Handy X Hub.

The complex also includes a 12-court sports hall, climbing wall, squash courts, a 150 station gym, a bowls centre, meeting rooms and a café.

The construction of the £35m Wycombe Leisure Centre is phase one of the Handy X Hub development, which also includes a coachway park-and-ride and a new Waitrose supermarket.
