Neighbours of a pensioner who died three days after being involved in an incident at a zebra crossing have described him as “a mild-mannered, placid guy”.

Paul Davidson, 69, died at his home in Lansdown Road, Chalfont St Peter at around 1.45pm on Monday.

Police believe the death was linked to an incident in Market Place, Chalfont St Peter – less than a five minute walk from Lansdown Road - on the previous Friday evening (November 6).

A murder investigation has been launched with a 70-year-old man from Gerrards Cross and a 43-year-old man from Hillingdon being arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday.

Police announced today that the 43-year-old had been released without charge but the 70-year-old man remains in police custody.

Ricky and Julie Desouza, who have lived on Lansdown Road for almost four years, knew Mr Davidson and paid tribute to the retired engineer.

Mrs Desouza said: “I can’t get over it – it’s absolutely shocking.

“He was a mild-mannered, placid guy. He looked like you could blow him down with a feather.

“I can’t imagine him fighting and I can’t even imagine him arguing.

“He was such a nice guy. He would always wave to us and he was part of the scenery here.

“It’s hard to come to terms with what’s happened - the more you think about it the worse it gets.”

Mr Davidson was believed to have been planning on moving away from the area prior to the incident.

Mr Desouza said: “He was looking forward to his future and talked about moving to the coast.

“He was always walking with his dogs. He seemed happy as Larry – it’s such a shame.”
