Four schoolchildren had big shoes to fill this week as they took the reins and had the opportunity to be the mayor of High Wycombe for a day.

Dressed-up in the mayor’s robes and joined by three others who acted as deputy mayor and mayoress amongst other roles, the youngsters experienced what life would be like in the traditional role.

Current town mayor, councillor Mohammed Hanif, organised the event to breach the gap which he had noticed between the mayoralty and the young.

He said: “I hoped this would be a good way to encourage young people, talk about our history and tradition and to show them how everything works.

“It was a fantastic day and the children really enjoyed it.”

As well as taking part in the ceremonial role, visiting the mayor’s parlour and council chambers, the group also took part in a series of traditions including the Beating of the Bounds.
