Councillors say they are “absolutely staggered” that a new pedestrian crossing on a road where cars have been found to speed at 70mph could cost up to £250,000.

A feasibility study on a proposal to construct a pedestrian crossing on The Pastures suggested work could cost £210,000 or £250,000, prompting district councillors to ask if the crossing would be “gold-plated”.

The crossing would be adjacent the Disraeli School and Children's Centre and near sheltered housing for dozens of residents.

Wycombe District Councillor for Disraeli, Khalil Ahmed, said: “I was very alarmed when I saw the feasibility study. I thought ‘what, are they going to be gold-plated or something?’ I just can’t understand why they are going to be that high.

“But, I’m equally concerned at the fact that the speed survey revealed there were cars speeding there, not just on a one-off, but on numerous amounts of times, up to 70mph.

“We do have sheltered housing across the road, where we have very elderly and mobility limited people who live there and we have a school there too.

“With cars speeding along there from 6am in the morning at 70mph right through the day, it is very worrying.”

Plans to implement a crossing using community infrastructure levy funds were included in a list of projects which Wycombe District Council’s town committee hope will be given the green light and be implemented in the next three years.

Other councillors have now called for a review of the Transport for Bucks study and said they should look for cheaper alternatives.

Cllr Lesley Clarke said: “I am absolutely staggered by the cost of that crossing.

“I think Transport for Bucks are having a laugh and I do think we ought to be looking elsewhere to have that provided.”
