Chiltern District Council chairman, Cllr Mimi Harker, led the tributes today with other residents describing the pensioner’s death as “truly tragic”.

Cllr Harker, who represents the Chesham Bois and Weedon Hill ward, said: “It’s incredibly sad - terrible news. Obviously, all of our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“It is always sad when you lose someone that is close to you, but especially at this time of year, just after celebrating Christmas and the New Year.

“Our sincere condolences are with his family after this terrible, terrible accident.”

Police are currently appealing for witnesses following his death.

They believe that the man, who was found about 10 metres north of the junction with North Road, had fallen from his bike and suffered serious head injuries.

Paramedics took him to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He had been cycling on a blue folding Hercules bicycle before the crash, officers confirmed.

Amersham and District Residents Association chairman, Bron Curley, said: “The first I heard about it was this morning, when I saw the appeal for witnesses. It’s truly tragic.

“I know the area well, I have lived here a long time, but I don’t really know much about what happened, there isn’t a lot of information yet about the circumstances.”

He added: “I can’t recall anything like that ever happening in that area before.”

Tributes have also been left on Facebook following the accident, with residents paying their respects to the victim.
