The fate of Marlow’s greenbelt will be decided at the end of this month as a debate over solar energy comes to a head.

Energy firm Anesco want to erect hundreds of solar panels on land in Little Marlow earmarked by Wycombe District Council as a country park, which has caused outrage amongst campaigners.

And after initially claiming the proposal went against green belt and country park plans, planning officers are set to make a full recommendation to the council on January 31.

The plan has racked up numerous of objections from residents and community groups, including the Marlow Society which fears the energy park will tarnish the AONB.

Chairman of the Marlow Society, Martin Blunkell said: “The proposed solar farm would take away a significant part of the essential green space that the local authorities have protected and enhanced consistently during the last thirteen years.”

Little Marlow Trust, which owns the land just south of the A4155, is adamant that former quarry site is brownfield land and does not affect greenbelt policy.

Trustee, Norman Weiss, said the development, which includes planting of trees, would mask the ‘poor’ quality of the land improving the view for residents and ramblers.

Meanwhile Marlow carbon campaigner, Liz Lorente, stressed we must produce green energy and while solar is a "welcome" option, water-powered hydro electricity would be preferable.

She said: “In the long-run, we will probably need both, solar plus hydro. It is no good sending our good wishes to those who have been flooded in the north - or even our poor neighbours in Pound Lane and beyond who were flooded in 2014 - without trying to do something to reduce our carbon emissions.

“The Hydro project in Marlow weir which would be more aesthetic, reduce flooding, help fish and provide a wonderful meditative sight to see in Marlow while supplying pure green energy.”

Plans for a hydropower generator on the River Thames Weir by Marlow Bridge were dropped last month following government subsidy cuts.

Only if the planning officers recommend the solar farm application for approval at the end of January will it be sent to the committee for a decision.
