A major supermarket could be the frontrunner in the race to move in to Amersham town centre, just over a month after it controversially closed down.

Iceland’s Amersham store at 75 Sycamore Road closed on New Year’s Eve with the Chairman of Chiltern District Council Mimi Harker claiming the move was “a huge loss to the town”.

But following a petition against the store’s closure – which was signed by Chiltern District Chamber of Commerce – it could be set for a dramatic return.

The supermarket, which said it is “keen” to return and has submitted an offer to developers, topped a BFP readers’ poll of possible tenants with 47 per cent of the vote.

A total of 295 readers voted on the poll entitled "Which of the following retailers do you want to see move into Sycamore Road, Amersham?", which ran for almost 24 hours.

Restaurant chain Bill's came second with 20 per cent of the votes, followed by Morrisons (17 per cent), The Co-op (nine per cent) and Zizzi's (seven per cent).

Developer Angle Property, which is redeveloping the building, has confirmed Iceland, The Co-op, Morrisons, Bill’s and Zizzi’s are all “very interested” in the site.

An Iceland spokesman said: "We’re keen to reopen a store in the Amersham area and have been overwhelmed by the support of local residents.

"We have submitted an offer to Angle Properties to occupy the retail unit underneath the new residential development planned for Sycamore Road, and are awaiting a response."

Plans for the redevelopment of the site - which includes two other retail outlets, Cargo and Chilton Watson Opticians, would see the existing building replaced with two retail or restaurant premises and as many as 35 new flats above.

More than 300 residents reviewed the proposal, which was received by Chiltern District Council on December 22, during a consultation day at Amersham Free Church on Saturday, organised by the Amersham Action Group.

Morrisons and the Co-op declined to comment when contacted.

James Good, Director for Angle Property said: “Absolutely no decisions have been made, however, it is clear from public feedback that residents are keen to see a food retailer return to the new development."
