Gareth Ainsworth claims he was as pleased with the manner of Wycombe Wanderers’ performance as the positive result in their 1-0 win against Exeter City.

Stephen McGinn scored a spectacular winner to secure all three points for the Blues in a match which saw both sides struggle to create clear chances.

The home side did keep the ball well though and Ainsworth was delighted to see a culture change from the route one style of play which Wycombe have often offered up in recent weeks.

He said: “The way we won was more pleasing than the win itself. We have grown as a club and a squad today without a shadow of a doubt.

“It hasn’t gone well at home from the start of 2016 but I thought we played really good football against a really good footballing side.

“Paul Tisdale knows the game well, so for us to go out there and play some good stuff today was great. We wanted to change the way we play at home and we did that today.”

Wycombe owed their win to a brilliant individual effort from McGinn after the often unused Scot fired home a curling effort from 25 yards out.

It was a rare moment of attacking quality and Ainsworth praised the finish from a player who he says has genuine class when it comes to goalscoring.

Ainsworth said: “Stephen is a great finisher, one of the best at the club. If you ask any of the boys they will tell you that.

“You don’t get too many chances from midfield but he is a great finisher and has two really good feet which he proved today, and what a goal to win the game.”

Exeter produced little of the free flowing attacking play which Ainsworth had suggested they would in his pre-match comments and were limited to few chances.

When they did break through they found Ryan Allsop in good form as he helped preserve parity in the first half. Ainsworth was therefore pleased with his trams efforts and heralded a first home win of 2016 after the game.

Ainsworth said: “Ryan Allsop kept us in it with a couple of good saves but we really controlled the game.

“They were dangerous from a couple of set plays and they are going to pick up a lot of points. It is nice to get a first home win of 2016 under our belts.”
