Around 300 police officers from across the south of the country lined the streets of High Wycombe today for a planned protest by the English Defence League which resulted in four arrests.

Officers from five different forces - Thames Valley, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire – lined the streets as well as mounted officers and dog handlers.

EDL members marched from the station at 1.45pm, down Castle Street and then into Frogmoor where they came just yards away from several groups of counter demonstrators including Unite Against Fascism.

Thames Valley Police say around 300 protesters took part in the demonstration which resulted in four arrests, three on suspicion of public order offences and one on suspicion of criminal damage. Police confirmed the four are all currently in custody.

Shop owners at Ruby Moon in Castle Street turned their back on the EDL protesters as they passed through.

Ch Insp Rebecca Mears, Deputy LPA commander for Wycombe, said: “I am pleased to say that the demonstrations in High Wycombe today were peaceful and few arrests were made.

“The success of the operation is, in no small part, down to the excellent partnership work before and during the event between the police, other agencies and representatives of our communities.
