Students from a south Bucks college beat three other Bucks colleges to win a challenging youth competition, showing “true strength and determination”.

Participants from Amersham & Wycombe College, which has campuses in Amersham, Flackwell Heath and High Wycombe, beat teams from Aylesbury, Berkshire and Milton Keynes colleges last week to win the 2016 Mark Webber Youth Challenge at RAF Halton, one of the largest RAF stations in the UK.

The Mark Webber Youth Challenge was founded in 2014 by Inspire Young People, a charity the Australian-born F1 racing legend, who lives in Bucks, is a patron of.

Speaking about the event, college spokesman Andrew Kirk said: “The tasks were tough and really tested everyone who took part, but Amersham & Wycombe College students showed true strength and determination and gave it their all.”

Teams competed in four physically demanding events including shooting and a drill programme designed and scored by the RAF. Mr Kirk said one student, who did not want to be named, was given a special bravery award for persevering on a particularly tough physical challenge despite having asthma, and overcoming her fears on a “terrifying” and “nail-biting” high ropes challenge.

He added: “The students were brilliant and an absolute credit to the college.”

Mark was on hand all day to motivate and cheer on the teams, and handed out prizes at the end.
