Safety measures will finally be installed on an notorious accident black spot near Marlow following a tireless council and resident campaign.

A Vehicle Activated Sign will be erected on Sheepridge Lane in May which will warn motorists to slow down on a sharp bend in the road where a number of cars have overturned.

Little Marlow Parish Council (LMPC) initially pushed to lower the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph however Bucks County Council said there has not been enough accidents on the busy stretch to support the move.

However it hopes the sign will encourage drivers to hit their brakes and reduce the amount of accidents on the winding stretch where four cars have ended up on their roofs in the past two years.

The safety scheme was awarded cash by the Local Area Forum last year – a county council pot of cash set aside for community projects – and LMPC has put money towards the project.

Leader of the parish council, Cllr Valerie Brownridge, said: “This has been something the Parish Council has been trying to fight for about a year now.

“We have been working with Bucks County Council on what we can do to improve the road safety.

“Vehicle activated signs will be installed because there are lots of accidents on Sheepridge which are down to cars going too fast on the bend."

BCC has recently completed a string of separate projects on the road including upgraded warning signs on the bend, improving the road surface and installed new road studs as part of a local safety scheme.

Cllr Brownridge continued: “The fact that it is a 60mph speed limit on the road has caused some problems as there haven’t been enough accidents for us to get it reduced.

“However the speed limit it too high for us to get flashing speed signs warning people of the speed limit because 60mph is already too fast.”

The signs are due to be installed at the end of next month.
